Newham Council want you to get involved in the shaping of Newham’s public places and are investing £1.5m to make it happen. The mission is to create 18 imaginative and original public art and public space projects across eight of its town centres. These projects should be enhancements for where you live, and you will be steering the priorities and locations for the projects
Newham is a great place to live and we want to make it better – people are at the heart of everything we do.
–Rohksana Fiaz OBE, Mayor of Newham
As part of your local community, you are invited to participate in choosing the priorities and locations for the town centres in Beckton, East Ham, Forest Gate, Green Street, Little Ilford, Manor Park, Maryland and Plaistow. As part of a series of workshops, you will then vote for their favourite ideas and work with the council, architects and local artists to develop the ideas further. Later next year, the results of this collaboration will be installed across eight different town centres and areas in Newham.
Shape Newham has been designed to do 3 things:
- To get you talking to your neighbours. We want you to talk about any local issues, to share your ideas with one another, and to celebrate your local resources!
- To get you involved with the council’s decision making. We want to improve transparency with the council's decisions.
- To get you shaping places! You can do this by developing the projects with the artists and designers and making decisions around their projects.
Visit the opportunities section for information on how to get involved!
The development of Shape Newham is led by AOC Architecture in collaboration with a team of designers that include Carver Haggard, Office S&M, Europa, Social Broadcasts and Local Works Studio. The design team, along with local artists, will ensure that the development and delivery of all projects reflect and represent the people and places of Newham.
